Rael urges international hugging contest to promote peace and love
LAS VEGAS, Mar. 15 – Rael, founder and leader of the International Raelian Movement, has proposed a unique way to promote peace and love worldwide. “We should have a Planetary Hugging Day,” he said in a statement released this morning.
“A philanthropist or a group of philanthropists could put up a large cash prize for the couple completing the longest hug. A million dollars or even $100,000 would assure that the entire planet would compete!” He suggested that a hefty bonus prize for a winning pair of mixed racial, religious, or ethnic backgrounds would go even further to promote good will. “Of course, they couldn’t be related sexually or through family ties,” Rael said. “In fact, the ideal winners would be strangers or near-strangers before the day of the contest. That way, they would truly symbolize what all of humanity deserves and needs on this planet – the celebration of differences and the promotion of love and peace regardless of race, ethnicity or religious beliefs.”
Rael said he got the idea for a Planetary Hugging Day contest after hearing a BBC report last week. “The story was about two Salford University students in the United Kingdom who just set a world record for longest uninterrupted hug,” he explained. “So I thought, why not take this idea worldwide to help eliminate war and encourage harmony? We could have an international contest with a big cash award for those who break this new record!’” His idea of the ideal winning couple?
“Let’s dream of a winning pair consisting of an Israeli and a Palestinian,” Rael said. “With a $1 million award, I’m sure many Israelis would try!
