Montreal, August 30th, 2014 - Only a few days after the 7th annual GoTopless Day event, which was held on August 24, a 3-year old girl, who was playing in a public wading pool, was told to put the top of her bathing suit back on, or else to leave the premises.
"What a disgrace. We're talking about a little girl quietly playing in a pool and who cannot even read or write! For a lifeguard to make such a startling statement is an embarrassment. And in the name of what? A pseudo-morality", exclaimed Sylvie Chabot, Raelian priest and spokesperson for GoTopless-Canada. She added: "This lifeguard should focus on her job and ensure the safety of swimmers, instead of playing the role of some kind of pseudo-educator because the message she conveyed to the little girl and all other children who witnessed the scene was that their bodies are ugly, dirty, impure, and certain areas had to be hidden. Did the lifeguard also ask the little boys around the pool to cover their breasts?"
The GoTopless organization was founded by Raël nearly 10 years ago on the premise that women should have the same rights. They say that wherever men have the right to be shirtless, women should also be entitled to the same right.
Sylvie Chabot concluded: "We hope that this lifeguard will realize her mistake and will apologize. Sure, we all make mistakes but this situation only proves that a lot of work still remains to be done in our society and that GoTopless’ mission is timely and important! To this end, we would like to reiterate our request to Mrs. Trudeau and Mulcair for their support. Both have received a formal letter sent to their office last week, and in this letter we ask them to pressure the Harper government so that the Canadian Constitution is upheld when it comes to women's rights.
